Giving Thanks in All Things

“God asks us to give thanks in everything--- because this is the way you live through anything.” -Ann Voskamp

When life feels overwhelming or we have a tough day, it is so easy to focus solely on what is going badly for us and in the world around us. We tend to focus on the negative and to “give complaints in all circumstances” rather than giving thanks.  This steals our joy and causes us to lose sight of the many blessings in our lives.  Practicing gratitude requires us to move past our circumstances and to fully embrace and trust in God’s unfailing love for us. Gratitude can literally transform us if we make it a way of life. It can be difficult in times like this, times of uncertainty and great anxiety to choose gratitude.  The word “gratitude” comes from the Latin word gratitudinem, which means “thankfulness.” As we approach Thanksgiving, it seems like the perfect time to brush up on our gratitude skills.

So, what does God’s Word say about gratitude?

“Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him. For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods.”  Psalm 95:1-3

“Always be joyful.  Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

How do you practice gratitude? Here are some ways I have been practicing lately:

  1. Praying God’s Word- specifically focusing on Psalms
  2. Making an extra effort to verbally express gratitude to my close friends and family
  3. Writing down a list of at least 5 things I am grateful for on a daily basis
  4. Playing worship music as I go about my daily chores
  5. Gratitude meditation

Announcements:

On Sundays, we have three options for Worship & Praise! Please join us:

For the Indoor Worship & Praise:

We are looking forward to seeing you! As you sign up, request one ticket per family member! Make sure that you also check out our updated Guidelines for Gathering to Worship at MCC below before you come.

Click here to register online for Indoor Worship.

Please read the Guidelines for Gathering to Worship Together at MCC in its entirety so that you know what to expect when you come to our outdoor service. This will help you and those around you navigate a very new situation, hopefully in a way that is as seamless as possible.  We believe that our unity will be expressed and strengthened as we serve one another in Christ this week so join us in extending grace to each other, amid our differing perspectives, and different views about how to live in this time.

“... submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Eph. 5:21

“Outdo one another in showing honor.”

Rom. 12:10

“By this all men will know that you are My disciples,

if you have love for one another.”

Jn. 13:35

Please know that we are making every effort for this gathering to be in full compliance with the protocols given by authorities. No single plan for our meeting will ever be the perfect solution in any one person’s eyes.  We will all be making compromises.  But as we defer to these guidelines set up by our elders and leadership, we will be serving our fellow believers, honoring Christ as best we can, and providing for a beautiful expression of worship to happen together.

Please stay home if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are immunocompromised.
  • You are feeling ill (running a fever, coughing, or showing other signs of sickness)

Please don’t put yourself or others at risk.  Thank you for staying home and staying safe, because we love you!
