I know what it is to be soul-starved. To seek provision where no provision is. The things of this world beckon me to come and feast. They tell me that I can find fulfillment in self-seeking, ease, and the pleasures of worldly treasure. Yet in these things I find no sustenance. All the empty promises leave me soul-sick and hungry still.

 

The deceitfulness of my own heart also invites me to find soul-supply. The invitation is to seek, out of my own resources, the power to sustain and the goodness to commend me to God. Yet here again all I find is empty boasts. I discover that my power is a broken and sin-warped support that cannot hold me up. I find that my own righteousness is as filthy rags: insufficient and unholy. Rather than commending me to God, my own perceived righteousness condemns me before a perfectly holy God. I am left empty again.

 

Yes, I know what it is to be soul-starved, ever seeking fulfillment and finding none. But praise be to God that I also know what it is to be soul-supplied. The Lord has called to me, saying, "Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat.  Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance. Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you--the sure mercies of David" (Isaiah 55:1-3 NKJV).

 

It is the voice of God calling me to forsake sustenance from any other source but Him. To give up seeking to earn anything by my own supposed merit. To look to Him, find in Him, and take from Him all that my soul has need. And I have found, by the power of His Spirit opening my eyes, that in God is the Bread of Life. Jesus tells us in John 6:35, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst" (NKJV).

 

I have found in Him my Supply. His promises are never broken, His sacrifice on the cross nourishes my hungry soul, His storehouse of endless treasure is my delight, and His spotless righteousness enrobes my soul. Oh, the beauty of my sufficient Savior! "Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:8, ESV).

 

Whenever I forget where my soul-supply is, may the Holy Spirit point me back again to Christ. Oh, taste, my soul, and see that the Lord is good! (See Psalm 34:8.)
